Washington: On December 19, 2025, the US Army launched a major military operation against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria. This action was taken after the attack near Palmyra on December 13, in which two American soldiers and a local interpreter were killed. America clearly said that this attack is part of retaliatory action and its objective is to curb the activities of ISIS.
According to American officials, the role of ISIS was revealed in the attack in Palmyra. After that it was decided to give a strong message to the organization so that it would not dare to target American and allied forces in the future.
This entire operation was named “Operation Hawkeye Strike.” Under this, simultaneous attacks were carried out on more than 70 targets associated with ISIS in central Syria. These included fighters' bases, weapons warehouses, and infrastructure used by the organization.
The US Army used F-15 and A-10 fighter aircraft, Apache helicopters, and the HIMARS rocket system in this operation. Jordan also supported America by sending its F-16 fighter planes, which further increased the firepower of the campaign.
President Donald Trump said a “severe response” has been given to the attack on American soldiers. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called it an act of blatant retaliation and said several ISIS fighters had been killed. He indicated that if needed, such steps would be taken in future also.
The Syrian government has supported these attacks. In recent months, coordination between Syria and the US against ISIS has increased, and armies from both sides have worked in coordination in several operations.
Currently, about 900 to 1000 American soldiers are deployed in Syria. All these are part of the ongoing mission against ISIS. The US-led coalition is continuously engaged in weakening the organization's remaining networks through air strikes and ground operations.
